Tips for sustainable living

At Bouwinvest we work hard to make our homes sustainable. Solar panels, insulation and efficient installations all play their part. But we need your help too. Here are a number of things you can do to cut back costs and help the environment at the same time.

Heating

  • Keep windows and doors closed and only heat the rooms you spend the most time in
  • Turn the thermostat down to 15 degrees during the night and to 17 or 18 if you have underfloor heating. (Please note that if you have a heat/cold unit (wko) it is important to maintain a constant temperature for comfort)
  • Lower the temperature on your thermostat by one degree. The difference is almost negligible and you will save on your electricity bill.
  • Lower the thermostat to the night time temperature one hour before you go to bed
  • Do not heat your bedroom

(Hot) water

  • Do not use more hot water than necessary
  • Time your showers and don’t take more than 5 minutes
  • Take a shower rather than a bath
  • Do you have to wait for hot water to come out of the tap? Collect the cold water in a container and use it for other purposes, such as watering plants.

Equipment and lighting

  • Prevent energy waste by turning off electrical equipment completely
  • Check the energy label when you buy new electrical goods
  • Only use the washing machine when it is filled to capacity and wash at low temperatures
  • Hang your washing up to dry instead of using a dryer
  • Replace ordinary lightbulbs and halogen bulbs with LED lamps
  • Do not leave any lights on when not necessary
